Remote Winter Wild Camp | Overnight Snow, Icy Tents & 2 Munro's from Corrour Station
Welcome back to another Outdoor Intrigue winter wild camp, this time on some of the most remote mountains the UK has to offer. Only accessible from Corrour train station, which can't be reached by car, we set out on a cold crisp winters morning with views reaching Ben Nevis, The Grey Corries and further afield towards Ben Alder.
Our clear blue skies didn't last for long with dark snow clouds rolling in over the Mamores. Watch on to see how much snow fell over night and the iciest we've ever seen our tent!
For this fast and light adventure, Ben used the Hanchor TUFA 38L pack and Megs is using the Hyperlight Mountain Gear Southwest 2400. We took the Hilleberg Allak 2. We've been using our Se...

    Great review...love the outer tent very much.. but the flappy inner would be a deal breaker for me... Most of my tents are inner pitch first ( yes i know they have their disadvantages) for the reason they make for a more taut inner... I assume you have reviewed the Voyager which i am also interested in... Thanks again for your review....most helpful...

    The Akto is a solid tent. The Terra Nova SC 1 has a solid outer that hardly moves in the wind. It moves less than the Akto. Like I said, it is just the inner fly quality that let's Terra Nova down. Also their QC.

  • @davegalloway7531
    @davegalloway7531 2 месяца назад

    That's the problem with the Terra Nova tents. They are made in China, that isn't a problem if you have good quality control in place. Myself and others have had problems with the Southern Cross 1 and 2 inners. Poor QC.

  • @davegalloway7531
    @davegalloway7531 2 месяца назад

    Exactly what I said about the inner sag, and mainly the inner poor quality! The tear strength of the inner, especially the new updated tent, the QC is terrible, as is the inner quality! The new 2023 edition is EXACTLY the same in respect of the inner quality, even on the Terra Nova Southern Cross 1. The sag is still bad. QC had NOT improved! It is a shame as the outer is fantastic. Just spoilt by the inner and the poor QC in China and at Terra Nova.

    Tent prices, along with everything else it seems, have skyrocketed and not always with a corresponding improvement in innovation, design, materials, or quality. Part of it is probably just the increased cost of just about all things in the supply chain these day, but I think the other contributor has been the introduction of boutique style/specialty shelters in the UL field made from novel materials like dyneema etc. Tent manufactures seem to be asking consumers "What's the upper limit to what you'll pay (and we can get) or for a tent?" as opposed to asking themselves "What's the best tent we can make in this price category?" The bottom line for me is that any tent surpassing $700USD absolutely must be completely polished in terms of fit and finish. There is simply zero excuse for a poorly made tent priced over $700 that has stitching issues, tautness issues, pole issues, missing guy points....backed by lackluster customer service. When those issues are present, I regard them as an indicator that I did not actually get a premium tent, but instead purchased a cheaper tent that was merely up-priced according to the new market. Such things might be acceptable in a $300 sporting goods store / car camping tent. They are unacceptable to me in a premium tent. Hilleberg is my gold standard in this category. Fit, finish, design, materials always top notch and all backed by a rock solid and responsive lifetime warranty.

I’ve been a three season wild camper for decades but your winter expeditions encouraged me to tackle an overnighter on Dartmoor in January and two nights on the Rhinogs last week, though necessitating an upgraded mat - Xtherm - with a 4 season bag from Alpkit. Thanks!! By the way, what stakes do you use for the snow? Working my way thru your back catalogue 😊Cheers, Graham

We both love Dartmoor, and in winter it’s even better. Good kit choices you’ve made, a decent mat and bag are so important to winter comfort. All that experience you have will put you in a good place for taking on winter in all its forms. For snow we use a variety of pegs depending on the expected conditions. Usually a mixture of MSR Cyclone & MSR blizzard stakes. Take care and happy trails!!! Ben & Megs

    Nice review Ben. Been looking at the Inov 8 lately. Looking at the G345 & G400... Getting sick of wearing heavy boots in the summer. You still wear Inov8? Some good points about durability. Seen other reviews about them getting wet easily and taking ages to dry out. Especially if their gore texed lined. 🤔

    • @OutdoorIntrigue
      @OutdoorIntrigue 5 месяцев назад

      Hey Kev! I haven’t had any Inov8 bits for a while actually. I do like the grip on their stuff and the graphene is pretty interesting. Megs had a pair not too long ago and it was the same story the sole lasting amazingly and the upper not lasting very well. I’d say all Gortex boots take ages to dry, but that’s one of the sacrifices for hopefully 🤞🏼 having dry feet. I’d highly recommend the la Sportiva ultra raptor boots, they are all I use for lightweight (non stiff) boots most of the time. I’d honestly say their grip and comfort is the best around. They do also suffer a bit with lasting annoyingly. I always find the waterproofing in lightweight boots is the first thing to go. It’d be good to see you and Robin again btw!

    I found the hood was better on Odlo stuff. I just can't see the cost justification for On. It looks cool but the functionality is patchy. I find the trail runners don't grip well in the wet, they have crazy expensive insulators vs other brands. It's all a bit too "lifestyle" for me. If you compare it with Arcteryx, pretty much everything Arcteryx make is functionally brilliant and being used in the most extreme environments on earth, as well as by posers who want a alpine GTX Pro jacket to walk the dog.

      Absolutely agree with you about ON Running stuff! And about Arc’teryx stuff. Wouldn’t get anything from On after the bits I had.

      @@OutdoorIntrigue I like Haglofs and Odlo. Been buying both for years and I've not been disappointed. My brother likes Salewa stuff because it fits him well. There's lots of good gear out there besides paying a premium for a trendy name.

      Highly recommend it! There’s so many trails and hills that you can link together, could easily spend a fair few days out camping and hiking. There’s a youth hostel near the top of the loch and apparently when the station is open for the season it does great food too. Thanks for watching, let us know how you get on if you ever head out that way!
